Walnut Venture Associates


Walnut Venture Associates is a Boston-based group that focuses on information-technology companies. Sweet Spot:
Seed- and early-stage companies in New England only. Prefer to have executive summaries sent to them via E-mail.

Common Angels

Invests only in New England companies. Entrepreneurs/firms who apply should have a premoney valuation of less than $5 million. If you're interested in pitching an idea, use the screening questionnaire available on their Web site.

Early-stage software companies.

Prefer not to receive full business plans (or anything else for that matter) in hard copy. Use E-mail instead.

Vermont Investors Forum Inc.

A nonprofit corporation that holds annual forums and introduces angel investors to early-stage Vermont businesses. At each forum, 10 to 12 small Vermont businesses are selected to present business plans. Forums may be attended by invitation only.

Sweet Spot:
Only invests in companies located in Vermont.

Tri-State Private Investors Network

In the past five years, Tri-State PIN members have invested in more than 50 start-up and early-stage companies. Businesses in which they have invested include manufacturing, telecommunications, community banks, real estate, software, electronics manufacturing, microbreweries, theater, Internet, restaurants, and travel. Run by Sandles Capital Resources and founder Ellen Sandles, the group is based in New York.

Sweet Spot:
Early-stage companies in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

No-Go:
Don't call or send snail mail. Send E-mail only, preferably straight from the Web site. In fact, they were so strict about this, they wouldn't even reveal their phone number or address when we asked.

$500,000 to $2 million

Tech Valley Angel Network (TVAN)

TVAN angels invest in early-stage businesses in northeastern New York and adjacent western New England. Register and complete a business review form on the TVAN Web site for consideration.

Sweet Spot:
TVAN is interested in all types of businesses that demonstrate a good investment opportunity with a reasonable chance to succeed.

$50,000 to $1 million
